Today in Darrens class we handed in our final papers. i havent written a paper that long in a while so it felt very long and difficult. i spent a long time on the paper. I wrote about ethnic koreans living in Japan and some examples of discrimination they face. I also wrote about how the myth of homogenity in Japan can lead to racism. japan is not as homogenous as they wish to be. Many Japanese were proud of the homogenous culture. they thought they were gifted on an isolated island because it gave them oppurtunities to understand each other even in silence. It was interesting learning new facts. Also today in peters class we had a little party. We had some snacks and drank tea. it was also peters b-day! I was happy we had a video camera because those videos are soo important when you are older. cant wait to see it when in the coming years and remembering all my class mate friends that i had lots of good times and bad times with. thankyou everybody!

Studying Abroad

Hello everybody. many of are classmates are going to study abroad. 5 people from our class are leaving this month... they are going to Australia and Korea! The other day the people who are going abroad for two years, knew what school they are going to. I realized we are going to be all over the world and it was exciting. The first year i will go to Washington State, USA and the second year I will go to Oxford, England. Yuki is going to the same school as i am the second year. I was really surprised and felt happy that i already have a friend there! My first choice for my second country was really Belgium, so i was a little shocked to know i wasnt going there. but after a while i thought of all the good things about England and of Oxford Brookes University and was really happy about it. I have never taken French before either so i think it would make more sense if i went to England. America and England might seem similar but i am looking forward to seeing the big differences that might not be apparent unless you live there. British English will probably be hard to get used to. There is only a little bit left of IES and it is hard to believe. Good luck on your final Papers everybody!! me too!lol

Men Authors or Women Authors?

Today in Darren s class we wrote a list of the authors we remember that we read in the past. I thought i should read more. a lot of the authors were authors that teachers told me to read. I read more male authors than female authors. not much but about 40 % were men and 60 % were women. I think the reason that more people have read male authors than female authors is because in the past it was easier for men to become famous than women. Therefore, the overall number of famous men writers became more than women. So that is why more people read men than women. But i think in the future it will become more equal as more and more talented female writers become famous. Another factor may be that people think men are smarter. I think this idea is decreasing dramatically but the old idea is still influenced to the present.
Another reason that Kazutaka pointed out is the genre. I think this has to do with it too. In my image men write more action than women and women write more about love.
I never really tried to compare which gender i read more so this was interesting to think about.

Seijinshiki (adult ceremony)

On January 9th i went to the Adulthood Ceremony in Hiroshima. There were many people and it was a beautiful view because every girl had a kimono on. It was really colorful. All the guys had a suit on so they looked really good too! Usually the Adulthood ceremonies are for meeting your Junior Highschool friends because its local, so i couldnt meet my Junior Highschool friends because i was in Hachioji at the time. But i still had fun. I wished i could have gone to Tokyo too, but being in two places at once is impossible so..... oh well. I met some people from highschool and some people from elementary school that i went to for about a month.. most people that i met remembered me so i was happy(^^) Wearing a kimono was really special!! i didnt want to take it off. it was also good for making my back straight! i think i used a lot of muscles that day. It was a good day!! Congradulations everybody!!!!

Winter Vacation

Hi, how is everybodys winter vacation? I am sure the Bs are having fun at least taking a break from studying. i am also sure that some people have met their friends from highschool or junior highschool. Last night i met 1 friend i didnt see for three years and another friend i didnt see for two years. They both live in the states now, but both havent changed much. of course they changed a little but not much. I had a lot of fun and it made me think that highschool is a time when people learn lots of things and that it is a big influence on ones way of thinking. University is also important and has a big influence but i think it is more academi than personal. So what i want to say is by the time people graduate from highschool they usually have their own personality mostly completed. Thats why i think the friends i meet from highschool never reallly change. it makes me happy. and even if it has been like 2,3 years it can still be fun like it used to be. When i met my friends from elementary school in america, a good friend of mine changed! not in a bad way but in a good way. she used to be pretty shy, but now she is very social and bright! she was still the same but a loooot more confident and social and seemed to get her way as she wanted. haha hope i can meet her again. if i go to the mall in michigan she is always there so maybe i can see her next winter. so i guess i am trying to say that friends from highschool tend to be the same so two, three years doesnt make a dramatic difference as it did in junior highschool. so i am beggining to understand why my mom meets friends in years and is always the same. i am sure i will keep in touch with my highschool friends and will meet them even if it is like 4years next time. i am also sure that my College friends will be my friends until i am old too. This may sound corny but real friends really last 4ever!!! tommorow i will meet another friend that i havent seen in 2 years! i am really looking forward to it!! well thats it for today. Lets enjoy our holiday★

Merry Christmas!!

HI everybody! how was ur christmas? hope you had a nice one. in japan christmas is usually for couples.... but in most other countries it is about family and other people that are important in your life. so my family still celebrates christmas the american way and today we had a looot to eat. one of my favorite parts is the dessert. Christmas sugar cookies with icing, ice cream and pumpkin pie. on the 23 there was another little christmas party so we had cake and gingerbread cookies. we made little yummy houses out of the cookies. i am eating too much.... but i cant help it.. we also had lots of presents under the little tree. i am gettin i-pod and am so happy. i got my brother, dad and grandma clothes and they looked like they liked it. i felt i used a lot of money but it felt good seeing them happy when i gave it to them. Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays! i liked christmas better than my birthday because everybody gets presents and there is lots to eat and we can just relax(^8^) Where ever i live in the future i would like to celebrate christmas the way i always did and give and recieve many presents. spending christmas with ur b-friend or girl-friend is nice too but there are lots of other people to celebrate with!! dont forget that single boys and girls!!(^^)

Communism- Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution

December 20th was the day that peters paper on animal farm was due. Countries such as China and North Korea will hopefully realize that Communism does not work before it is too late.. it might be too late already....

Genocides.. what would you do?

Hello, today i read the article that kazutaka sent us about the Genocides in Rwanda. i once wrote a letter to the government last year for mr.bergers class. it is so sad that people kill each other just like that. a persons life is so complicated and precious that is is not something that can be taken away in an instant. One instant, one bullet destroys everything at once. The very complicated person is gone because of a bullet. it is so sad. We live in a very peaceful country so for us it is easy to say i will never kill anybody but what if we were in the situation of the Nazis and the Hutus what would happen?? maybe we would think differently. You either have to kill somebody or you are killed very crulely... which would you choose!?
i don t even want to imagine myself in such situation but it is the reality in some countries. I can not imagine what i would do.. i dont want to take anybodys life away.. but it would be so scary if i knew i would be killed if i didnt! what would i do.....? i never think about these things unless i read articles that give me the sad truth of this world that i usully run away from . something to think about..

Done with Presentation

Hi today me and aiko finished our presentation on pornography. we thought we would finish before class was over but we actually stood in front of everybody for about 90minutes. it is not easy being a teacher but sometimes its fun to stand in front of everybody!! i was thankful that some people participated in the discussion. it helped us. Peter also is always talkative in the discussion so the discussion went on for a long time. we talked about if pornography is good or bad for society. we also talked about what is defined as pornography. some of the questions were hard to answer at the spot so it was quiet for a few seconds but i think we did pretty good and everybody was interested in our presentation. hope you enjoyed the presentation Bs. Next week is about "Race Relations" Natsumi and Yuuki will be the presenters! i am looking forward to your presentation because the topic sounds interesting!!

We are big comsumers

Today in Darrens class we talked about the cosumption of Americans. Darren told us that when he was 19 years old he went to a country(i forgot) in South America. He said that it was the first third world country that he ever went to. Darren said that he thought the feeling of wanting more was something that everybody in the whole wide world wanted. But on this trip he figured out that people in the real poor countries are happy with what they got. i also thought that everybody wants more and that it is a human thing.. but now i think it is a culture.. because we are rich and because their is a consumption race like the artical says. people who have a lot want more.. so they are less thankful than the people who dont have much. i think this is why so many rich people like japanese and americans even have debt to pay for what they want. like they use credit cards when they want something really badly.. this is because are income is high. if we didnt have a high income like in the third world... we would be more thankful for what we have and wouldnt want more.. we are in a really rich country!! we should be thankful.. or maybe ashamed...

Already November!

Time passes by so fast these days. The gakusai was really fun but i had a cold and my throat hurt really bad so sometimes it was hard to eat... the food was really good! maybe if my throat didnt hurt i could eat more food and it would taste better. my throat didnt hurt like that in a long time so i felt weak...haha but now i am a lot better so i feel good. when the season changes i usually get sick... but now it turned pretty cold so i think i will be back to normal soon!! well thats it for today.

Too Nutrual!!!!

Hi! She decides not to tell her family or anybody about her sickness and that she only has a couple months to live because she doesnt want to leave an image of her being weak and of her going to the hospital all the time. She writes a list of ten things that she wants to do before she dies. she is only 24 so it made me scared. she did all the things she listed until she died. she left a message for all her loved ones and than passed away. the ending of the story was pretty sudden. but it was a good movie that made me think of life and how precious it is. and also that you never know what will happen. it didnt make me cry but it made me think. if you have time you should watch it.

History is important

These days in Darrens class we are learning about history. Yesterday we read a little bit about Christopher Columbus and how he discovered america and started a "genocide". The author of the preface we read, is looking at history with his own point of view and the point of view of the "other side" that isnt looked at as much. The author is looking at the discovery of America by the perspective of the Arawaks, the Civil War seen by the New York Irish, the Spanish American War seen by the Cubans... and so on.. I dont know much about the author and world history in general, but i think this author is very important. You have to look at things three demensional to try to understand it. what i mean is you need to look at things from as many perspectives as possible. at least two. So i think this author is a good writer. I hope to learn more about big events in history because i need to know a LOT more than what i know now.

Bird Flu in the year 2007?

I just finished pretending that i am a person 100 years from now writing about today (history). Well, as you all know today is August 6th and 60 years ago on this day at 8:15 am the first atomic nuclear weapon of human history was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is when people started to realize how deadly nuclear weapons are. Today I went to the ceromony at the Peace Park. It is always sad to go there but i think i should go and am glad that I went today. My Grandmothers sister was a victim of the bomb as well as a surviver and she gave me and my sister the invitation letter of the ceromony so we got to sit really close to the front.　I saw the Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi and many other famous political people. There were many people from all around the world. It was so hot outside but it was nothing compared to this day 60 years ago. Many people were burned to death. We can not waste the poor innocent lives that were killed because of the bomb. we must do what we can do to stop war. August 6, 1945 must not be forgotten and must be told to all the kids so people will know how scary nuclear weapons are.

Done with my essay!

I just finished my essay.... but am I really done? hope so.. I wrote about the causes of hunger. I think the three main causes of hunger are poverty, wars, and inefficient agricutural practices. Everything is a vicious circle... People cant buy food because they cant afford it and people cant get jobs because they are too weak. Also because there are not enough jobs in the developing countries. People have lots of kids so they can have a higher income, but they also have to feed all of the kids. I didnt know that war was so related to hunger, but it definatly is. Wars destroy everything from people to the environment. It also destroys food and causes famines. Thousands of people are killed by wars and also famines that are caused by wars. Lastly, agricultural practices are not emphasized enough in the developing countries. Higher priority is placed on industrialization instead. What the developing nations really need to do is put higher priority on agriculture before they can get industrialized. More money needs to be spent on agriculture and education rather than military expenses and industrialization.

Near the End

Hi! we are near the end of the first semester.　Today I handed in Peters portfolio and we feel much better. I really need to learn how to use the MLA biblio-maker better... or they should make it better...haha Yesterday I went to Nellys concert with Yuki, Michika and Natsumi and it was so good! But it was soo short... I wish he sang more. But I really enjoyed the concert so i am glad i could go. That was a fun event for me recently but now I have to finish up the first semester! So I have Scotts final essay, and other tests and essays and I am done. I hope I dont do all of these the night before because it isnt enough time to get the information in my head. What are you planning on writing about? I think I am going to write about hunger and the causes of hunger. I hope this essay turns out to be a good one for us all.

we can eat all we want!!

Hi, this saturday me and my friends from this class (you know who you are) went to kushiya which is all you can eat!! I ate soooo much.... I havent eatin like that in a while so i was really bloaded! i felt like i was going to burst! Everybody who ate was really full too! We ate rice, warabimochi and lots of fried things and ice cream, potato salad....etc. anyways we ate a LOT! then I thought that we are so rich because we can go to an all you can eat resturaunt when ever we want and we eat sooo much while lots of people are starving looking for food. I really felt that I ate more than my stomach could handle..... but people in developing countries eat so little that it is not good for them and their stomach is crying out for more. I wished I could give the extra food to the starving people... I also could understand how there is enough food in the world but that it is unevenly devided. if i ate half of what i ate (which is probably the right amount) starving people could eat the other half and we would all be happy.... Obesity will also decrease and malnutrition will decrease. I hope this day will come soon! I will try not to eat so much again..

Only 6 more days of classes!

wow! we only have 6more days of school. The first semester went by so fast! I think it is because we are really used to gaidai life and most of all, because this is our second year being classmates. Pretty soon we are finished with 3/4 of the IES program. 1/4 left and then we will all be apart. Most of us will probably be in other countries which is really exciting. We have 6 more days of classes but we also have tests following so I wish the tests are over with.... When the tests are over with we are free! I am excited going home because it is always so much fun. I hope to save lots of money this summer break. So i will try not to use too much. The first one is the future is like a roller coaster...which means you cant choose where to go and are stuck in the position you are. You cannot see the future at all so you cant do anything about it so you just give up. The second metaphor is our future is like a dice- which means everything is by chance. So it means you will have to live up to everything that happens and you never know what will happen. The third metaphor is the future is like a ship on the ocean. I think this is the best metaphor because we can choose where to go in the future, even if we might come across a rock or something. The fourth metaphor is the future is a blank piece of paper. I like this metaphor but i think it is too perfect because we are not on a perfectly white piece of paper now... we already have some handwriting on it. I think we have some conrtol over the future but we are not in perfect control. so our future is like a ship on the ocean!

The Rainy Season

Lately it seems that the TUYU began. I thought this year we were gonna have no tuyu so I was really happy, but I was wrong. The earth isnt that crazy yet... But while I didnt want rain, my friend was worried because there was no rain. Partly because it wasn't normal and partly because people doing agriculture were unhappy. I realized that tuyu was an essential part in agriculture for Japan. Now I am glad that the tuyu finally came. It also made me think that one good thing about rain is that we cant control it. If humans made a device that could control the weather we would do what we felt like doing instead of thinking about the earth logically so it could become a global issue. Technoligy is so convinient, but at the same time scary... After taking Scotts class I cant throw away a pet bottle, it is such a waste. so i go the supermarket to recycle the pet bottles and i always feel good. Those pet bottles can do more than some poeple might think. For example they can make plastic benches. I was also thinking that more people might recycle if they get money for doing so. In America you get 10 cents per can you recycle. So when i was a little kid living in America, me and my friends would go around picking up cans that were tossed on the streets and grass. We would take them to a super market near by and exchange them for money and than exchange it into snacks. This was fun then but I did not do it for the environment, I did it for the money and fun. So I was thinking if they did something like that in Japan, maybe more people would recycle. Some kids might even go around parks to pick up cans and pet bottles to by snacks like me and my friends did when I was little. The total cost of everything would probably be cheaper if the government payed 10yen for the recycled cans and bottles. Is there a place where people get money for recycling? If so I would feel weird about writing this blog.... If there isnt I think it is a good idea to do what America does. Besides the fossile fuel probelm, this is a good idea America made.

Its June!

Hi! It is already June! Today we did mini presentations and my group talked about how climate can affect food production. We learned that global warming can have both negative and possitive aspects. In some countries such as Canada, global warming is good because it will enable Norhtern countries such as Canada to grow more food, such as wheat. In other countries that are warm enought already such as Japan, it can be a bad thing. It can get so hot that the heat will damage the plants and Japan will have a hard time producing food. So you cant really say if gobal warming is good or bad because it has both effects. When Japan had many typhoons last year, a lot of vegetables were destroyed. The prices went up big time and were so expensive. Lettuce cost about 500yen! So I know that climate can really affect the production of food.
It is so easy for me to get food...all i have to do is pay. But it takes a lot of time and money to produce these foods so I feel very lucky to be in a country where all i have to do is pay and I get what I want. Also the shapes of vegatables and fruits are perfect! When I lived in America, the cucumbers were like daicons but here they are all small and cute and tasty!

Everything is interconnected!

Hi! Today in class we were studying for the test for tommorow. I really think everything is interconnected. Because of big population, there is not enough food for the people, lack of food results with malnutrtion, and because of malnutrition, people die, when people die mothers have more kids (because they want more of their children to survive) than the population keeps rising and more people die because of the lack of resources. This is a bad circle.... I really learned that one thing keeps on connecting to the other. One problem makes ten problems at once. This is why it is a big challenge to stop these problems.. you can not simply stop one problem to solve the whole big problem. But at the same time one problem can stop many problems at once. Does this make sense? Well to summerize what i want to say is that everything is really interconnected. We must ALL take part in solving the little problems to solve the one big problem which is to have a balance betweent the rich and the poor. To make the developing countries developed.

Back from Golden Week.

Yesterday I came back from Hiroshima and there were so many people!! I came home with Rina and we stood the whole way back in the bullet train and to Kyobashi. We rode the junkyu so luckily we could sit from Kyobashi to Hirakata. Like what we talked about in class today, I could feel that a lot of people are moving from the Rual areas to the Urban areas. I think many people went home to see their families and friends all over Japan. Some are working adults and some are students like me. A lot of people get transfered to more Urban areas because of thier job and a lot of students chose to study in Urban areas. There are also more jobs in the urban areas so I can see why the population of urban areas is increasing.

Another day of school

Hi! Dont you like the weather these days? I do. Its not too cold and its not too warm. In todays class we went outside to learn in a new style, which was really fun and taught me some really important facts about the world. I heard about the global issues we talked about today but I never really visually saw the percentage. I was in the poor group with 2dollars a day. I couldnt imagine living with 2 dollars a day, or earning just 1dollar a day. I use more than 2dollars a day!.... when I saw the rich people in our class like Yuriko, I didnt feel jealous because in real life I was one of them. i actually felt guilty. Because of the fact that we grew up in a wealthy country, we take for gratnted our wealth and health. We always want more. But because of our selfishness a large percentage of the world is suffering. This class tought me how many people are living in poverty. we(I) tend to think that I dont have anything to do with it but i do! I hope we can all help the world by at least knowing about these facts! I wonder what we will be learning next! see you!

Today we did a some thinking about what makes a Global Issue a Global Issue. First of all I want to learn how to Blog. well I just did so what i am trying to say is that I hope to use it effectivly and have a lot of fun using it. I am glad I learned about blog today because it sounds so cool! I also want to learn about the Global Issues. There are probably many Global Issues around the world that I dont know about. I still dont really deeply understand what is going around in Iraq..... I know I need to learn more about Iraq. I know one thing.. my 2nd cousins husband is in Iraq and its so scary to hear that. My friends dad is also in the gieitai so he is in Irag too..... Oh when I went to Hawaii this Spring I was watching "Straight eye for the queer guy" is that right? and there was this happy couple who just got married and had a cute little girl. they were happy but the husband had to go to Iraq so it was so sad. The show is usually funny my sister said but it was so moving. They had a really good show on. They guys from the show bought them so many things!! Like a laptop for each so they can talk everyday through the net. and so many other things! lots of DVDs so the wife could watch it while he was gone and like a whole army kit;shoes, back pack, food..etc and they got there house reformed! it was so nice! they also had a heart necklace for each other so they were always together. I hope he will come back safe to his family in 2 years! there are so many brave soldiers out there that I hope will make it back to their loved ones safely. Most of us living here in Japan dont know about these things because Iraq sounds like it isnt really realted to Japan but I think we should think about it more seriously because there are a lot of people out there that have to say good bye to there families... the saddest thing is that it might not just be a temperary good bye...... wow I wrote a lot didnt i? bye lol

My first blog

Hello, this is my first blog.
